Glorious Sceptre :: essays research papers
The Immortal Sceptre Within the Iliad Homer portrays through association and symbolism the sceptre as a representation of divine power. Agamemnon is the nominal owner of this sceptre, on which much emphasis is placed in the early stages of the poem. This relic, a sceptre once owned by Zeus, has a kingly and divine past and, as a result, is a symbol of authority, power, and recognition within the kingdom of Greece. Homerââ¬â¢s discussion of the sceptre in Books I and II serves to elucidate these characteristics of the sceptre. In the earlier stages of book II, Homer establishes the godly and noble history of the sceptre. Through a slight digression in the story line, Homer gives the reader a brief overview of its former owners: "Hephaistus gave it to Zeus the king, the son of Kronos, and Zeus in turn gave it to the courier Argeiphontes, and lord Hermes gave it to Pelops, driver of horses, and Pelops again gave it to Atreus, the shepherd of the people. Atreus dying left it Thyestes of the rich flocks, and Thyestes left it in turn to Agamemnon to carry and to be lord of many islands over all Argos. (II, 102-109)" In naming Hephaistus, Zeus, Hermes, and the kings of Mycenae, Homer describes a legacy that enhances the sceptreââ¬â¢s image as a token of influence and power. Moreover, it is important to note that the sceptre was not conceived by a mortal, but rather by Hephaistus. Using the wood from a living tree in the mountains, he constructed an immortal device for Zeus. Hephaistusââ¬â¢ creation of the sceptre both bolsters the notion of the sceptreââ¬â¢s divinity, and strengthens its image as a symbol of influence and recognition. In Book I of the poem, Achilles takes oath upon the sceptre. In his oath, Achilles states his intent to withdraw from the army and swears that the Achaians will one day regret their irreverence. However, before anything is sworn, Homer has Achilles describe the sceptre by stating that it "never again will bear leaf nor branch, now that it has left behind the cut stump in the mountains, nor shall it ever blossom again, since the bronze blade stripped bark and leafage" (I, 233-237). Achilles emphasizes the sceptreââ¬â¢s imperishability and endurance as a symbol. Lacking life and therefore lacking the prospect of death, the sceptre is, in a sense, immortal, giving reason for its divine connotations. Essay --
Williams 1 Michael R. Williams Jr. Ms. White English 3 14 October 2013 The Illuminati Did you know that the Illuminati originated around the 1760s. A Freemason named Adam Weishaupt started it all by himself. The Illuminatiââ¬â¢s ultimate goal is to make the world all one big government and one big religion (religion is allegedly known to be Scientific). The hopes were for the borders around each country, state, et cetera to be diminished. They have been pursuing their goal since the French Revolution. The ââ¬ËInternational Bankersââ¬â¢ helped finance the Illuminati so they could start the path iwhich was their main goal. (Ellis-Christensen) The Illuminati was credited for weakening the British and French Empire, which was their first step in their plan that was written in the 1770s (Ellis-Christensen). In the 1780s the Bavarian Government found out about the Illuminati and the government forced the Illuminati to ââ¬Å"stopâ⬠what they were doing. But the Illuminati continued doing their strategic plan(s) by going under different aliases; so the Bavarian Government wouldnââ¬â¢t catch them again. By doing so and still continuing their plans, the Illuminati acclaimed to have taken complete control over the European Government, they were helped once again by their alliance the International Bankers, to succeed at doing this. (Wallace) Williams 2 The Illuminati was supposedly the cause of the ââ¬Å"Congress of Viennaâ⬠which was formed to still make the world a one-world government. But the attempt was a failure due to Russia not agreeing, so it never happened. A director by the name of Karl Marx created an idea to divide races up into different camps to brainwash them. Once everybody was brainwashed the idea was for the different races to fight each... ...er think. The one world government and religion may just happen, but we wonââ¬â¢t know until it happens--if it happens. Certain people can join it, but can you leave? The outside public will never know, we just have to go off assumptions on what happens within the Illuminati. If you leave you might just have to die, but you never know you might be able to just leave? People ask why I would choose this topic, because itââ¬â¢s a very controversial topic to do and it would come with criticism. Even though it is a topic thatââ¬â¢s surrounded around controversy itââ¬â¢s a great topic to choose and talk about. People just fear what they donââ¬â¢t understand and a lot of people donââ¬â¢t understand the Illuminati--so thatââ¬â¢s why they fear it and rather avoid anything dealing with it. The Illuminati has a long history dating back to year 1784, and itââ¬â¢s still continuing on until this day.

Website Analysis Essay -- Computers Internet Essays
Website Analysis Sometimes it seems like the computer game industry is dying, crushed to death by its own bulk. Every year more and more gaming companies get gobbled up into huge conglomerates like Electronic Arts, companies that mostly put out trash that is technically and visually impressive, but devoid of concept and content. However, there are some small gaming companies that buck the trend. While mostly just small groups of programmers and artists, some are huge unions of fans who, irritated with the dropping quality of computer games, have decided to use the power of the internet to get together and to produce games tailor-made to their personal preferences. For the sake of comparison, Electronic Arts' website (http://www.eagames.com/) was examined. Like many company websites, it is very pretty, with pictures of the games everywhere. The dark backgrounds and light text are easy on the eyes, and the site is well organized. Tabs on the left let the viewer select the desired gaming platform; pull-down menus and a search bar on the top allow for easy access to the game titles. Each gaming title has a sub-webpage which provides a vignette of the game: a short synopsis, pictures of game play, system requirements, a link to the official webpage of the game (which usually has a separate layout and more diverse information, along with reviews, etc), and of course a ââ¬Å"Buy Nowâ⬠link. The EA Games website does a very good job of providing information about its products to someone who knows nothing of its games, giving enough of a description to pique the viewer's interests; it is primarily in place for advertisement, and would not make a good nexus for a fan community of its games-- it provides no forums, lists of clan matches ... ...his broadband connection to play multiplayer games over the internet (and therefore has the bandwidth to spare to load a site with many large, connection-clogging features), the games produced by Moonpod and Hero6 are older in style, and therefore appeal more to gamers who prefer traditional, offline games, games best enjoyed in single-player mode. Traditional gamers donââ¬â¢t need a fast connection for the sort of games they play, and may be more likely to use the cheaper 56K dialup. They can't be bothered to go to a website that would take the better part of an hour to load, so Moonpod and Hero6 program their pages accordingly. Depending on what one was looking for, I could confidently recommend any one of these sites, or all of them. All are well done, and I know that I for one am the target audience of all three, as I play games displayed on each of the websites.

Deontological ethics Essay
Utilitarianism ethics accentuates that the activity that should be ethically beneficial to the group. In further terms, the outcome of any moral activity ought to be valuable for all by mass offer. This is a universal fundamental theme for ethics in industrialist economies and business as well as in all governments. Virtue Theory is also known as virtue ethics focal point on the personââ¬â¢s character as opposed to the standards and outcomes of the particular acts. This fundamentally means that the prime focus is endured or not to the person who acting ethically is a person who upholds the high virtues and morals, in expressing the good character in people. , plan, results and conclusion are not so much immaterial; nonetheless, the significance of virtue theory is first and foremost. Dissimilar to virtue theory, deontology has a substantial accentuation on obligation in activity, in adherence to runs the show. The right activity is essential here, whereupon fruition, ought to achieve the best useful for all included. This is to some degree like utilitarianism, which does concentrate on the result of the best great. Be that as it may, deontology does not incline toward the result itself, yet all the more so the guideline behind submitting the right activity. The moral behind deontology is about rule and after tenets. Every one of the three of these ethical practices has substantial likenesses. The essential comparability is outcome of activity. Despite the fact that result is not generally the essential center of the activity, it is normal in every one of the three theories that the outcome ought to have a gainful come about as a conclusion of the activity. Whether the activity is focused around rule, qualities or ethics, the end sought to legitimize the methods. The most ideal approach to express the contrasts between virtue theory, utilitarianism and deontological ethics is to take a typical situation and examine from these three alternate points of ETHICS ESSAY 3 view. A person who polishes good virtual ethics would call attention to that by helping the individual, doing so would be a magnanimous demonstration and would express great character of the individual supporting the one in need. One who practices utilitarianism would say that by helping the individual, doing so would be useful for both the individual in need and the individual making a difference. A deontologist would say that by helping, it would be so in agreement to an ethical tenet, for example, karma, or what you do to others will return to you. As the illustration shows, virtue theory concentrates on an individualââ¬â¢s ethical morals, and not on any particular conclusion or guideline. Utilitarianism has a stress on more prominent elseââ¬â¢s benefit, concentrating on an advantageous conclusion for all persons included, where the results of acting are useful to a group. At long last, deontology stresses obligation as the particular activity being carried out in fulfillment of emulating a particular good code, governor charge. In past role as a sales/inventory associate for Centennial wireless. A problem with ethical decisions came up on a daily basis on the job. On a daily basis, I had to do the daily deposits and check each associate cash drawer that always had 100. 00 dollars in them at all times. Multiple times a sales rep had over their cash drawer or short. If they were short, they had to place the cash that was short to equal 100. 00 dollars or if they were over they had to deposit the average. When I check their bags, I gave them a warning they had till business hours to replace that money or just to deposit it. I keep the record for my records, and if it happens regular basis, I get the manager involve. The reason I keep the information to myself is because a sale person can give too much change to a customer and does know till I or they count their cash drawers at the end of their shift. So I understand mistakes can happen. My decision on this issue is based on the utilitarianism theory that looks for the best outcome for everyone within a particular situation. ETHICS ESSAY 4 In conclusion, one can addition further understanding into ethical and social obligation by analyzing the similitude and contrasts between utilitarianism, virtue theory and deontological ethics. Through further understanding of these similitude and contrasts one can start to understand the criticalness social and ethics obligation plays in particular and business achievement. The previous examination portrays the contrasts in how every theory addresses morality and ethics. The dissection likewise incorporates a particular experience clarifying the relationship between temperance, qualities, and good ideas as they identify with one of the three speculations. Besides, the examination clarifies how the data on social and ethics obligation achievement or disappointment, contingent upon the execution of the learning one addition from the information and the choices one makes. Probable Probability; Rolling Dice
Statistics is based upon based upon common sense and logic, in a complex data. Probability is just one of the many topics in statistical mathematics. It is used in our daily life, all over the world. Even games, require taking a chance and using probability to determine the predicted outcomes. Probability is the measure of how often a particular event will happen if something is done repeatedly, (596 Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary). You cannot determine any events that will happen in the future, because there is always a chance that something odd will happen, (Linn 39-40).Probability originally started for the purpose and attempt to analyze games of chance. Probability is also used in determining the outcomes of an experiment. Sample space is the collection of all results. Probability is a way to assign every event a value between zero and one. What is the probability of rolling a pair of dice, or a deck of cards, or a jar of marbles? What is the probability of conceiving a boy or a gir l? Many more are determined by the usage of the probability method.Probability is used to represent the likelihood that odds of winning a random drawing chance of rolling a seven when rolling two dice. When rolling a six-sided die there are six possible events that correspond to the six face of the die that contains either one, two, three, four, five, and six dots. Rolling a die and turning up an even number of dots would be one example, (2, 4, and 6). Probabilities are formally written as decimals in the range of 0-1. Meaning the event occurred. Meaning a certain event must occur. When rolling a die, getting a seven, eight, or nine or more dots is an impossible event. Two dots or fewer are a certain event. Probabilities can also be written informally in percentage for example 50-50-%. There is no negative probability chance. The probability of getting a face that has two dots on a die is 1/6(1. The probability of not getting the face containing three dots is 1/6, which is (1-1/6) = 5/6 or =. 833. Mutually exclusive means you cannot have two faces of one die at the same time. For example the probability of getting a face of two dots and a face of four dots is 1/3 or . 33, because the probability is the sum of the probability of rolling a two (1/6) and the probability of rolling a four is (1/6). This is a classical concept, because it is based upon prior knowledge of the process involved, in this case the rolling of a die. This approach of probability often predicts that all basic events are equally likely to occur. When this is true, the probability that a particular event will occur is defined by the number of ways the event can occur divided by the total number of elementary events. My chance of passing statistics class depends on probability.

House of Bernarda Alba- Elements of House
ââ¬Å"Bernardaââ¬â¢s house serves on a number of levels as the central image in the play. How does Lorca use the house to convey his ideas? â⬠In order to arrive at the central idea in Federico Garciaââ¬â¢s last play, ââ¬Å"House of Bernarda Albaâ⬠, the title is the first factor to be reflected on. Lorca has not presumably named the play ââ¬Å"Bernarda Albaâ⬠, or ââ¬Å"Day of Bernarda Albaâ⬠. He had named the play ââ¬Å"House of Bernarda Albaâ⬠because it will let the reader draw attention both to Bernardaââ¬â¢s ââ¬Ëhouseââ¬â¢ in the sense of Bernardaââ¬â¢s family and to the physical space of house itself, which functions as the central image of the play. The play employs number of themes which are supported by the central image of house. The state of house such as colour, size, temperature, condition and props, which are nonverbal elements all link with the theme which Federico is trying to convey. These features will aid to provide the audience with information about the setting of the play and give insight to the underlying ideas such as dictatorship, purity, fate and choice, freedom, confinement, and sexual oppression. The play commences with the brief description of the house, which aid to communicate the central idea of purity, and fate and choice to the audience; ââ¬Å"Very white inner room in Bernardaââ¬â¢s house. Thick walls. Arched doorways with jute curtains trimmed with black beads and ruffles. â⬠These descriptions are the important elements of the house. Readers are able to obtain the associated idea from the play by having a general understanding of the setting. From the description, first, colour is the element to consider. The walls of the house are all painted white. Because the play is set in Spain, this is the characteristic of homes in the country, since white reflects the sunlight and prevents house from heating. Though, the ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠colour in a deeper meaning, symbolises the purity and virginity. All the daughters in the house have not married yet, and after the funeral of the second husband, they are not allowed to look at men. Therefore, ââ¬Å"whiteâ⬠also represents the restriction of freedom and choice, where the restriction of choice is derived from evidence that all the rooms are coloured white. The girls have no choice; they cannot choose their destiny. Moreover, the family name ââ¬ËAlbaââ¬â¢ means white. This colour is seen as a contrary to the black dress of the women in the mourning as they enter the house. The colour black symbolises death and have an effect of foreshadowing the death of the character Adela, a victim of Bernardaââ¬â¢s tyranny. The decoration, props and set of the room also aids in obtaining the idea of dictatorship and confinement. The ââ¬Å"Thick wallsâ⬠indicates difficulty for the girls to escape the confinement of Bernardaââ¬â¢s control, again suggesting the idea of restriction of the girlââ¬â¢s freedom. From the description of the house,ââ¬Å"Arched doorways with jute curtains trimmed with black beads and ruffles. â⬠the jute curtains are described as being tied with black beads and ruffles. The jute is used for making rope and rough fabric, which symbolises men as ropes are generally used for menââ¬â¢s labour. Therefore it is symbolic for male presence in the home, likely from Bernardââ¬â¢s husband. Though, the black beads indicate the stage of mourning the house is in due to death of Bernardaââ¬â¢s husband. The decoration, ââ¬Å"Pictures of nymphs or legendary kings in improbable landscapesâ⬠depicts imaginary places, but it is an alternate reality which girls wish to escape to. In the form of picture and being hung on the white wall emphasise that the fantasy is in place where it is out of reach for the girls. The kings serve as an idea of dictatorship in the house, which in this play, Bernarda is the ââ¬Å"kingâ⬠, the ruler and the house is her castle. Through the symbolism of heat we see that Lorca makes the reader realise the tension heightening within the characters, which conveys the idea of sexual oppression. At the beginning of the play, Bernarda locks her daughters into the house, away from the outside world. ââ¬Å"There are eighty years of mourning ahead of us. While it lasts not even the wind will get into this house. â⬠Since Bernardaââ¬â¢s husband died, she does not want her daughters to be open to the outside world. Bernarda, trying to be helpful, wants her daughters to be pure and safe. But since the house is locked, no wind will come in the house and therefore heat will build up in the house. If the wind is symbolised as the men, the daughters who are not exposed to the wind (men) builds up their sexual desire. Characters who are not victim of this heat are the male characters that are shown outside the house. They are cooler in the patio or in the fields, suggesting symbolically that they do not suffer from sexual frustration. ââ¬Å" Is the lemonade ready?â⬠¦ Give some to the men. Theyââ¬â¢re having some on the patio. â⬠The symbolism of what is inside the house and what is outside is also illustrate the idea of freedom and dictatorship. The doors and windows serve as a both barriers and bridges. To the daughters, the outside represents freedom, new life, and sexual fulfilment. Throughout the play, the daughters number of times runs to the window and look at the outside world: the crowd leaving the funeral, men going to work in the fields, and arrival and departure of Pepe el Romano. ââ¬Å"Since heââ¬â¢ll be coming around the corner, you can see him better from the window in your room. [ The Maid exits. Adela hesitates for a moment, then she, too, rushes off towards her room. ] Bernarda strikes Angustius for looking out through the cracks of the back door, maintaining the idea of no freedom and choice for the girls. To Bernarda, the outside of the house represents threat to the reputation of her family name. She does not want her privacy to be spread in public, from her urge to protect her daughters. Bernardaââ¬â¢s power in the house means that sexual activity takes place outside the house as the house is completely under her control. This is evident when the Maid says, ââ¬Å" Rot away, Antonio Maria Benavides, stiff in your woven sit and your high boots! Rot away! Never again will you lift up my skirts behind the back corral! â⬠The back corral is outside the house, which illustrates the lack of restrictions out of the house. Another example is when Pepe and Adela meet. They do not meet at the house, but at the corral. accentuate Lorca was successful in portraying the idea of the play through the central image of house, which included; dictatorship, purity, fate and choice, freedom, confinement, and sexual oppression. Bernardaââ¬â¢s house thus functions as a central image in Lorcaââ¬â¢s final play by the use of colour, symbolism and other element of scenic design. The readers are able to obtain the various ideas Lorca is trying to inform, and we also get an idea of how some households were like in Spain during the civil war time. Moreover, this play was written during the Francoââ¬â¢s regime of Spain, which there were fascism involved. Women were treated unfairly in the society, such as their pay. Women could not make choices of their own including marriage. This point reflects the idea of daughters not being able to marry due to commanding power by Bernarda. The fact that these nonverbal elements of the house contributing to the central idea of the play makes the reader think deeply, which let us gain true appreciation for a work Lorca has done for his final moments of life. Critical Review
Frances Hillââ¬â¢s book is not in a horror genre as what the first impression could be with regards to the title itself.à It is merely a collection of facts and stories untold, and an extension of a historical argument that is more terrifying than fictional horror stories.à Is the book A Delusion of Satan: The Full Story of the Salem Witch Trial still timely to discuss or not?Witchcraft, sorcery and witch hunting; judicial perspective, extreme religious practices of good versus evil and social responsibility reflects on Frances Hillââ¬â¢s search for truth and justice by means of writing.à Being a professor in the school of law, she astutely provides the fascination to take charge the unending trials by publicity of the people generation to generation with the same subject Salem Witch Trial which created a deep impact on the history. The said mass hysteria in 1692 is one of the darkest parts in the history of America.à Although there are some who still patronizes such act of witchcraft, the tendency to repeat the mass hysteria is now impossible to happen.à We are now more scientific and democratic in all our moves while we are unfolding the history. Thus, as long as we believe in scientific bases and act intelligently, the delusion of Satan in the witchcraft trial like what the Salem people in 1692 has experienced will never happen again. It was clearly described in the book how the people during those days are immoral in their own ways, has poor understanding and explicitly drastic.à They tend to believe in superstitions and voodoo activities irregardless of their social status.à It was as if these people are all uncivilized, uneducated and not God-fearing people in the authorââ¬â¢s study which stated as follows. The Salem witch trial began and found suspects guilty as the judges allowed the supposed victims à à à à à à à à à à to testify about being attacked by the suspects in their spectral or ghostly formsââ¬â à à à à à that is, forms à that no one other than the victims could see.[1]à The trial resulted to sufferings of more than a hundred residents of Salem. They are tortured, beaten and starved in prisons.à Nineteen people à à à were hung and executed, and one pressed with heavy stones to death because of denying to the said accusations of witchcraft.à Others were made to stand without rest during interminable à à à à à à sessions of questioning.[2]Before the book ended, the author Frances Hill gave significant propositions why the girls of Salem Village behaved that way and why the judges and the people involved did not see their actions as fake, feigned and delirium.ConclusionTo conclude this critical review of the book, I would like to stress out my own statements and conclusions being an educated and knowledgeable individual.à Firstly, I certainly do not agree to the evil and grotesque way of the Salem Witch Trial.à I believe in due process, fair trial and fair justice which modern people like us practice in our day to day living.à Secondly, I agree with the authorââ¬â¢s battle against these evil activities by pinpointing facts from the history. However, I believe that this topic of trial for suspected witches are no longer timely and helpful in accordance to our more mature and technologically advanced culture.à Authorities, judges and justices themselves do not rely now on supernatural things. They evaluate the case based on scientific evidence, and sentence the accused in a more humanitarian way.à Hence, the authorââ¬â¢s topic and the book itself are just merely opinions and story-telling combined with a touch of intelligently driven research.R E F E R E N C E SHill, Frances. ââ¬Å"Chapter One Sowing the Dragonââ¬â¢s Teethâ⬠.
